FAQs

The Healing Spot Physical Therapy was founded out of a desire to slow down from the busy hustle-and-bustle healthcare system that rushes people in and out of the treatment room with very little connection and which often leaves people feeling unheard and unseen.

The owner and founder, Justine Calderwood – Physical Therapist and Certified Birth Healing Practitioner – wanted to treat people in the way they deserve to be treated because she was tired of the sub-par quality of care that she was forced to deliver in the busy, traditional outpatient clinics she worked in in the past. She was burned out from trying to deliver the quality of care that she desired to give her patients and the focus of her employer on productivity, billable units, and jumping through the onerous hoops of insurance that seemed to have become more important than the outcomes that the patients were achieving. She rushed from one patient to the next with no time between sessions to even have a few minutes to catch her breath. She spent more and more time doing paperwork than focusing on the person in front of her who desperately
needed answers.

She longed for true connection with her patients, to see patients as PEOPLE first over patients, and she was tired of the “suggestion” that certain forms of therapy would receive more money in reimbursement (and therefore would be more valuable to the clinic) than what the patient actually needed.

In short, insurance was beginning to dictate what treatment looked like vs what patients actually needed and the founder knew in her heart she wasn’t serving her patients in the way they deserved.

She believed she could get them to their goals faster if the patients weren’t passed around from therapist to therapist, if she could spend a bit longer during each session with patients, and if she could treat them like a whole person rather than a “body part”. She also believed that if she could care for herself in a better way she could show up for her patients in a better way as well.

And honestly, she was right. The patients that choose The Healing Spot to get better quicker and are super grateful to be seen as a whole person rather than just their diagnosis. Our patients value holistic services over medications and the “rest and wait” approach.

Our FREE Discovery Sessions are designed for people who want to get some help for a particular problem – like prolapse, diastasis, birth trauma, pelvic floor dysfunction or back, neck, or hip pain – but they aren’t completely sure what their options are, or if we’re the right people to help them. Our Discovery Sessions take care of this for you… it’s a chance for you to meet us face-to-face in a private room, get all your questions answered, and determine if we’re a good fit for what you need – completely FREE of charge. It’s a no-pressure, no-obligation appointment with a Women’s Health Expert, and there’s no prescription or referral required. If you’d like to “discover” what’s causing your problem first, BEFORE you invest any more of your time or money on treatments that just aren’t working, then Request a Discovery Session.

We offer an “After Baby Return to Exercise Screen’ as a way to help moms return to their favorite workouts and activities, confidently and safely. Some women reach out and tell us that they’re not really having any problems or concerns, but they’re still worried about returning to the gym or hitting the trails; they aren’t sure if they are “ready”. Other women reach out and say they’re having some concerns like pelvic pressure, pain or leaking or they were told by their midwife or doctor that they have a particular postpartum diagnosis (like diastasis or prolapse), so they want some guidance to get back to their workouts. Older moms reach out to us, sometimes years after having their last baby, because they want to “get back in shape” but don’t know where to begin. The ‘Return to Exercise Screen’ is a way to find out where you’re at versus where you want to be…whether you want to run, weight train, hike, swim, do HIIT workouts or get back on the yoga mat.

We’ll spend 45 minutes with you taking you through some movement tests that look at specific areas to determine your risk for injury or risk for developing common postpartum issues. Afterward we’ll sit down with you and give you an idea if you’re currently at High Risk, Low Risk or No Risk, taking into account the results of your tests. We’ll look at specific areas to check strength, balance, and tolerance to impact (running and jumping), all while taking into consideration the types of activities or workouts YOU want to return to.

During the appointment, we will share with you our findings and any concerns we have, and where you fall on the risk assessment scale. We will finish the appointment by recommending a course of action so you can get back to the activities you love as quickly as possible. You can book your ‘After Baby Return To Exercise Screen’ here for a minimal fee.

Discovery Sessions – we’ll send you a short form to fill out online before your appointment, so check your email. Look also for a separate email that shows you exactly where to find our office, so you’re not anxious about where we are or what to expect during your appointment. Please arrive a few minutes early and come prepared with all your questions for our specialist!

After Baby Return to Exercise Screens – we’ll send you a short form to fill out online before your appointment, so check your email. Look also for a separate email that shows you exactly where to find our office, so you’re not anxious about where we are or what to expect during your appointment. Wear your workout clothes and shoes because you’ll be moving during your appointment. Please arrive a few minutes early and come prepared with all your questions for our specialist!

First Physical Therapy Session – please check your email for paperwork to fill out about your medical history and current symptoms; you can complete it online, which saves you from having to arrive early to sit in our waiting room with a pen and a clipboard. The paperwork is thorough because we view you as a WHOLE person, not just your diagnosis; we want to see the whole picture of what’s going on so we can help you feel your best. Once you’re done filling out the paperwork and signing the consent, then just click Submit and you’ll be all ready for your first session. You’ll also receive a couple of other emails before your appointment showing you the clinic, where to park, and explaining what to expect to alleviate any pre-visit jitters.

Please wear (or bring) shorts and a sports or nursing bra so we can easily assess what’s going on and get started on treatment. You can bring these along to your appointment and we’ll give you a couple minutes to change in a private treatment room.

You won’t be receiving your care in a busy gym with a lot of other people, so no need to worry about what you look like or who else will see you; your appointment will be with you and your therapist.

If you have any additional questions or concerns prior to your appointment don’t hesitate to contact us, we want you to feel ready and excited to meet us, just like we are to meet you!

For All Sessions – bring your calendar! Our schedules fill up very quickly and you’ll want to secure your future spots with us right away. Most of our clients book out several weeks in advance so they can get their best days and times and keep the momentum of healing going.

The Healing Spot Physical Therapy is considered an out-of-network provider with most insurance companies. While insurance is not processed directly, many of our clients do submit their own claims to their insurance and receive reimbursement for the out-of-network physical therapy benefits that their plan allows – and The Healing Spot PT will provide all documentation necessary to do so, upon request. Additionally, all of our physical therapy services can be paid with funds from Health Savings Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, or you can set up interest-free payment plans with us directly. For more information about your specific insurance or to inquire about our rates and availability, please fill out an Inquiry Form Here or call our office: 719-270-1123 to speak with our Client Care Manager.

YES!! This is actually what we are known for. If you want to work with us – the best thing to do is request a FREE Discovery Session. We’ll make sure you’re a good fit for what we do and that we can help you – BEFORE you invest any time or money with us. We don’t just take on the care of everyone who reaches out to us; we want to be sure we understand your exact problem and be sure that we have the expertise to help you get better.

In fact, there are times we refer people to other clinics because we know they will be best served there; while we are trained in treating many orthopedic issues like ankle fractures and ACL sprains, we also know that we’re best at treating neck, back and hip pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and postpartum and pregnancy concerns, so we reserve our appointments for those people that we can help the best. The Discovery Session with a specialist is the best way to be sure we understand what your concerns are and to see if you are a good candidate to work with us.

Nope! In the State of Colorado, patients do NOT need a prescription to receive physical therapy treatment. And if your provider told you that you would benefit from the type of physical therapy we provide, but suggested a different clinic, this doesn’t mean you’re locked into having to go there as your only option. YOU have the right to choose the physical therapist who you want to work with and this decision is yours and yours alone; it’s okay for you to do your own research and pick the therapist that is the best fit for you, one who will help you reach your goals and treat you like a person, not just a number, all along the way.

That’s why we offer a FREE Discovery Session for you to sit down with a specialist face-to-face and ask questions BEFORE you commit any time or money to working with us. We see our patients as people, first and foremost, not just diagnoses or what type of insurance they have. We want to get to know you and what your concerns are, to be sure we can help you.

We have a variety of payment options and we would be happy to discuss our current costs and options with you on a Phone Consultation. First, we want to be sure we can even help you. Many people get concerned about what it’s going to cost them before they’ve even determined if we can help them. And that’s no fault of their own, society simply conditions us to ask about price and insurance instead of the most important question we encourage you to ask, which is “Can you HELP ME??”.

Our patients want to be sure that we can help them, they appreciate that we want to know their NAME and WHAT’S GOING ON before we ever ask them anything about how they want to pay. It’s just another way we put PEOPLE first and PATIENTS second. Our clients are looking for a certain level of care and appreciate the relationships we build with them.

If we can confidently tell you that we can help, how long it’s going to take and how many sessions you’re going to need, and therefore a total “price tag” of what it’s going to cost to take you from your current state to where you WANT to be, THEN work with you to figure out the best way to pay (yes insurance DOES cover our services)….what value would that bring to your life to reach the outcome you’re looking for?

To be honest, if you’re looking for the ‘cheapest option’ and the #1 factor for you when you pick your providers is based on what they cost vs if they can provide you with the outcome you want, we’re probably not for you. (Think about it….would you rather Google “the cheapest surgeon in my area” or “the best surgeon in my area”). When it comes to your health, just how far are you willing to cut corners?

If you’re looking for ‘the best’, then set up a call to talk to us! We won’t surprise you with unexpected bills; we are transparent with what we charge and we will work with you to set up a pay schedule that works for you. We have a variety of payment options; 1) pay for each session as you receive them, 2) if you want to save money then you can invest in your plan of care up front or 3) take advantage of our interest-free payment plans. We’re happy to go over your options on the phone or in-person.

We don’t want costs to get in the way of you feeling your best and enjoying life on your terms. We’ve treated many people who went the “cheapest route” and ended up spending far too much in time and money and STILL didn’t get the results they wanted; they oftentimes end up calling back months later, saying they regretted that they didn’t hire us from the get-go. Trust us, we know your time and finances are valuable; that’s why we only work with people whom we are confident we can help. We aren’t here to just take your money, we are serious about doing all that we can to get you feeling your best, in the shortest amount of time.

We get asked this a lot on the phone or during our FREE Discovery Sessions. To answer this question confidently and honestly, we’ll need to start with a conversation with you about what’s currently going on so we can get a good understanding of how it’s affecting your day-to-day life. It’s the best way for us to determine how many sessions you will need and how long it will take you to reach your goals. For instance, do you want to be able to lift your baby and push a stroller to the park; are you hoping to be able to travel or watch a concert without a gazillion trips to the bathroom; want to sneeze and laugh without peeing your pants; do you want to climb a 14er while backpacking or wearing your baby; or is your big goal to run a half marathon…all of these are different goals for sure, and your ability to reach them depends on many factors, including where you’re at right now, how much time you have to reach the goal, and what your previous level of activity was.

We’ll have to know how bad things are right now and how you’re wanting us to help you. We have the roadmap to get you from Point A to Point B, but we can only answer that question if we know what we’re working with. The best way to know that is to do the First Physical Therapy Visit. That’s where we spend an hour and a half with you, first checking out where you’re at, then starting with treatment to address your concerns and get you the right track to healing, and finishing the visit with instructions that you can get started with at home, specific to what we find and complimentary to the treatment you receive. During that first session we’ll tell you what we’re seeing, what we’re finding and why it’s important in relation to your concerns, so that you leave with real answers about your body and exactly how we are going to help you.

At the end of that first appointment, we’ll wrap up by sitting down with you and telling you how many sessions it’s going to take and how long it will be for you to reach your goals. The only way we can confidently tell you how many sessions you’ll need is through this process, otherwise, we’re just taking an educated guess based on what you’re telling us. As movement and musculoskeletal specialists, we have to see and feel things for ourselves and that’s best done during the First Physical Therapy Visit.

We won’t bore you with the exact details of what we do because no two people are the same, but we typically do a combination of manual treatment techniques (using our hands) to gently and efficiently help your body move better, release stuck spots and relieve pain; the most effective way we do that is through a whole body approach to treatment, exercise to target those areas that are weak or not working as well as they should, exercise to help with flexibility and tension areas, meditation to improve the mind-body connection and to move stuck energy of the body that may be causing your physical symptoms, and of course education.

We believe our patients get great results because we involve them in the process, we empower them with information about what’s going on in their body and give them access to resources to compliment what we are doing in the clinic….this empowers our patients and gives them the tools they need in-between sessions so they get better faster. We share resources in our Patient Vault (it’s online and accessible only to our patients), in emails and printed handouts. Let us know how you learn best so we can help you in the best way possible! Plus, our patients can reach out between sessions if they have questions or concerns…in fact we encourage it. We don’t want you to feel alone or like you’re “bothering us”. We’re here to help you feel better!

We let you decide this. First and foremost our job is to build your TRUST! We work with a lot of women who are survivors of sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse or have had traumatic birth experiences. It’s something we are sensitive to and respectful about. We will talk to you if we feel a pelvic assessment would benefit you, but we won’t pressure you and we respect the pace that you are comfortable with.

Not ready to venture there? No problem! There are plenty of other ways we can help you without internal pelvic floor treatment and we’re happy to discuss this with you at your appointment. We see patients one-on-one in a private treatment room for their privacy and comfort.

After you reach out for information in whatever way you choose (book a Phone Consultation, Fill out an Inquiry Form, Request a Free Discovery Session or After Baby Return to Exercise Screen) we will talk to you on the phone to find out more about you; we want to know what’s going on that prompted you to reach out for help, how it’s affecting you and your daily life, and what you’re currently missing out on that you want us to help you get back to (or what worries you have that we can help alleviate). We want to be sure we can help you before you make any commitments to working with us, and that starts with us finding out more about YOU.

After that conversation, if we are confident we can help you, we will recommend the next best step for you to solve your problem. Sometimes it’s a Free Discovery Session (30 minutes), sometimes an “After Baby Return to Exercise Screen” and other times women want to just get started so we suggest the First Physical Therapy Visit (90 minutes).

If you choose the Discovery Session then you will come to the clinic and sit down face-to-face with a specialist Physical Therapist to get your questions answered. Usually we pull out our anatomy models to explain what is going on with your body, we may share stories about other women we have helped in the past that were suffering with the same issues that you’re having, and overall the goal is to help you make a more informed decision about whether we understand your issue and if we can help you. If we can, then we’ll invite you to book an appointment for the First Physical Therapy Visit and schedule you right then and there (so bring your calendar with you as we book up fast and there is often a waiting list).

If after the Phone Consultation you choose to jump right in and get started, we will book your appointment for the First Physical Therapy Visit. During that session you will spend 90 minutes with a specialist Physical Therapist who will assess where you’re currently at (we will check your mobility, your strength, and find out where your pain or other worries are stemming from) then get started with treatment to fix the problem, followed by teaching you some customized ways to help yourself at home. During your appointment we will tell you exactly what we are seeing and feeling so you will leave with a much better idea of where you’re currently at (your “baseline”) and how we will help you reach your goals. At the end of the First Physical Therapy Visit we will sit down with you to recap the plan, talk to you about the number of visits you’re going to need to reach your goals and how much it’s going to cost you to get things taken care of.

You can book additional appointments at that time; bring your calendar as our schedules book up quickly and you’ll want to secure your future spots with us right away. Most of our clients book out several weeks in advance so they can get their best days and times and keep the momentum of healing going.

This is an interesting question and we believe it stems from the curiosity to know why we are an out-of-network clinic (which by the way doesn’t automatically mean your insurance won’t cover our services).

All our sessions are one-on-one, which means you won’t share your appointment time with other people. We have private treatment rooms so you won’t be seen in a busy gym; we create a comfortable healing environment where we hold space for you to heal through some uncomfortable things. The women we treat often need a space where they can feel safe and allow themselves to feel vulnerable in order to heal through different layers of pain.

You don’t need a prescription or a referral to come see us. Colorado is a direct access state which means you don’t need an appointment with your doctor before seeing us.

Before we take you on as a client we make sure we’re a good fit for each other and that we can help you. We want to know your name, your story and what your concerns are first, as we don’t believe in wasting anyone’s time or money. We want to be absolutely confident that we can help you before taking you on as a client.

You graduate from our services when you’re ready and feeling 100% – not because your insurance company told us to. We work for YOU, first and foremost, not for some insurance agent that doesn’t know what you need to get better.

We’re not a “big box” clinic – we take great pride in providing a friendly, safe and nurturing experience for you; we hope you’ll notice it from the moment you talk to our Customer Care Manager on the phone to when you step in the office for your appointments. We have hot coffee and tea waiting for you and we get to know you as a person versus your “diagnosis”.

We truly love our clients and we want you to feel great in your decision to choose us as your healthcare provider. We want to get to know you and your family and we give you our undivided attention. We want you to feel seen, heard, and empowered and have fun while you’re here, too.

We find that when patients are taken better care of and our therapists are able to do what the patient needs, rather than what insurance dictates, they are happier and reach their goals faster. We don’t believe we need insurance to tell us what we can and can’t do to help you get better, that’s where we rely on our years of experience and specialized training to do what’s needed to help you the most.

We offer a quality patient experience that our patients appreciate and often tell us makes them feel seen and heard in a way that other places don’t. It’s why we want to get to know you on the phone before we decide if we can take you on as a patient and before we ever discuss pricing or costs. It’s the emails we send that show you where to park and the inviting waiting room we create so you feel comfortable and cared for. It’s the calls we take the time to make when something unexpected comes up in your life, just to check on you.

It’s the texts we send just because we’re thinking of you and we know you could use a smile and a friend. It’s the hug you ask us for because we held space during your session so you could feel comfortable enough and vulnerable enough to cry and heal in a deep way. It’s the phone consultations and face-to-face consultations we offer with our specialists, even though we know you may not choose us among your many options for healthcare. We offer this because we know this is a big decision for you and we are willing to invest our time and energy into helping you make an informed decision.

It’s why many of our patients call us friends and invite us for a cup of coffee and send us texts just to say “Hi”. When you work with our team at The Healing Spot you’re getting our hearts for serving and living out our purpose of helping people heal and feel empowered; we believe you’ll notice the difference as soon as you connect with us. We’re here for you and it brings us indescribable joy to do what we do and to be able to work with the patients that walk through our doors.

At The Healing Spot Physical Therapy, we believe in cost transparency and your right to shop for high-quality, cost-effective services. We will be happy to provide you with a “Good Faith Estimate” of our costs upon request or upon scheduling. Call our office for more information.
