Returning to Running After Baby

Getting Back to Running After Baby: What You Need to Know

Having a baby is a life-changing experience, and for many new mothers, the idea of returning to their favorite activities, like running, can be both exciting and daunting. So, how do you know if you’re ready to get back to running?

The 6-Week Postpartum Check-Up: Not an All-Clear for Everything

You may think that because you had your 6-week postpartum check-up with your doctor and you were given the “all clear” that you are ready to lace up your shoes and get back to running, without any special considerations.

If that’s you and you tried that and you managed to get back to running without anything special to consider, I would say you’re one of the lucky ones!

When Running Doesn’t Go as Planned

If you’ve tried returning to running (or other forms of exercise like HIIT, weight lifting,

yoga, or Pilates) and encountered issues like pain, a pulling sensation, pressure in your pelvic or abdominal area, or even urinary incontinence, you might be tempted to push through, hoping that time will heal everything. Wrong!

Knowing What to Take Seriously

It can be challenging to discern what symptoms to take seriously and which ones to ignore. To help you navigate this, I recently addressed this common question in an Ed Talk titled, “I’ve Had A Baby and I Want To Get Back To Running. Where Do I Start?”

Click the image below to watch the video and find out for yourself the 3 signs I look for to know if someone is ready to return to running. They are the same 3 signs I warn my patients about so THEY can be on the lookout for them when they exercise.

Avoid Long-Term Damage

I’ve seen it happen where women push themselves too hard after having their baby, thinking that it’s okay to get back to their favorite workouts sooner than they were ready and it led to irreversible and long term damage. If you’re the type of mom who wants to feel good in her body AND feel confident she’s doing things right when it comes to returning to running, our ‘After Baby Return to Exercise Screen’ is perfect for you. In less than an hour, you’ll have the answers you need to confidently work out postpartum.
